Embekka Devalaya

Image
It has been said that the Embekka Devalaya may be the best place in the world. certainly in Sri Lanka to see the finest wood carvings of old. The main Temple or Maha Devalaya it self has two sections. the 'wedasitina Maligaya' (in which the Deity resides) and another which has the "Digge" (Dancing Hall) and the " Hevisi Mandapaya" (Drummer Hall). The Wedasitina Maligaya is where the wooden image of the Deity has been placed.  The main hall provides a feast for the eyes with its columns, pillars and doors all adorned with breathtaking wood carving. The roof  too  has its own special design done in wood. A unique feature is that everything consists entirely of wood, with no other materials being used, not even metal. Even the nails used have been hewn out of wood.  These beautifully carved designs feature some very interesting forms, one of the most recognizable being the Hansa Puttuwa or entwined swans. Other include designs of entwined rope (Lanu Gataya), ...

Burj Khalifa

Image
Dubai is certainly a city like no other; it is rich with culture, buzzing with life, vibrant with business opportunities, and stands proud of some of the most remarkable real  estate in the world. One of its most distinctive monument is probably Burj Khalifa. This man-made structure towers over the city at a height of 2,717 feet. Completed in 2010 after a little under 6 years of construction, Burj Khalifa, which  boasts 163 floors,  was developed by Emaar Properties. This multi-use building comprises residential apartments, an observation deck with a 360-degree view of Dubai, a restaurant, and even a hotel. It has broken so many world records as it  stands at 828m (2,716.5ft) above ground. Due to its height, a 6-degree temperature difference is recorded between its ground floor and its top floor. To understand the sheer size of this building, one can look at some numbers: the Empire state  Building in the US is half the height of  Burj Khalifa and the Eiffe...

Ruwanwali Maha Seya

Image
Build by King Dutugemunu, a devout Buddhist the benevolent ruler of the country in 137 BC, the Stupa is also known as Swarnamali Seya, Ratnamali Chetiya and the Maha Thupa. The name denotes 'sand of gems' probably owing to a large extent of invaluable gems, gold, pearls and silver contained in the stupa. Apart from its material treasures Swarnamali Chetiya is venerated and has  become a pinnacle for Buddhists all round the world as it contains the largest portion of relics from the pyre of the sacred body of the Buddha. According to the ancient chronicle Dhatuwamsa, one eighth of the whole-body-relics of the Buddha has been deposited in the stupa making it one of the treasured places of worship for Buddhists. The largest stupa build for the first time in the ancient world being 300ft in height and with a diameter of 370ft is indeed a testimony to ancient Sri Lanka architectural prowess fused with devotion. Encompassing excellent stupa is a tribute to the thoughtfulness of its c...

MY FAVORITE FRUIT

😃Jackfruit (Waraka)😋 The jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), also known as the jack tree, is a species of tree in the fig, mulberry, and breadfruit family (Moraceae). It's origin is in the region between the Western Ghats of Southern India. The jackfruit tree is well-suited to tropical lowlands and is widely cultivated throughout tropical regions of the world, including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the rainforests of the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and  Australia. It bears the largest fruit of all trees, reaching as much as 55kg(120 inches) in weight, 90 cm (35 inches) in length, and 50 cm (20 inches) in diameter. A mature jackfruit tree produces some 200 fruit per year, with older trees bearing up to 500 fruits in a year. The ripe fruit is sweet  and is commonly used in desserts. I really like to eat jackfruit. No other fruit has such a sweet taste.😋😋

patachara Ballet

Image
The famous Jathaka tale of Patachara will be beautifully recreated in all it's historical grandeur,at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre when the Arakavila Dance and Theatre Foundation (ADTF) takes the stage with their musical drama production 'Patachara'. This artistic expression of the musical, according to it's director and script writer Janaki Hill, aims to reach out to the youth with a message on religious and cultural values. "We see a lot of modern-day Tharas who tend to disregard social values and become victims of the hasty decisions they take at an immature stage in life, losing hold of their lives and turning to religion in the end", She says. Patachara's dance choreography is done by Janaki along with Rukshala Maddegoda, Kapila Palihawadana (NATANDA) and Srilal Perera (Srilal Academy) whilst acting choreography is handled by Anura De Silva together with Janaki. Music is by local composers Athula Edirisinghe, Pabalu Eranga along with t...

Mandaramnuwara tour

Image
Our friends planned to go on a trip. We decided to go to Mandaramnuwara. After leaving, I realizeed we had come to the best place. We went in a small van. We left Kurunegala at around six in the morning. It was around nine in the morning when we arrived in Mandaramnuwara. When we left, it was so foggy that we couldn't see anyone nearby. We walked up the mountain to see the Kolapathala Falls. we washed our feet in the streams and picked fruits from the trees. It took us about an hour to get there. I was surprised, the waterfall is very high and the area below is very beautiful. The water in the waterfall was very cold. we went into the water and took pictures. It suddenly  started raining, so we quickly came down the mountain. 😃😃 There was a mountain of avocados in a house at the foot of the mountain. we all bought a lot of avocados from there to take home. We didn't forget to by Leeks, Carrot and Beans that were available for sale. We had lunch and spent a lot of time free...
